Maybe not with chores.
But emotionally?
Most definitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children in these roles learn early to be more mature than their age. They learn to hold things together. They don\u2019t complain. They endure. They anticipate other people\u2019s needs. They manage the emotional climate. They become reliable, helpful, \u201cgood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In adulthood, these qualities look like strengths. And they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They show up as:

\u2022 loyalty
\u2022 competence
\u2022 responsibility
\u2022 perfectionism
\u2022 emotional stability
\u2022 maturity
\u2022 leadership<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Employers love people like this.
Partners love people like this.
Society loves people like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because these people are driven.
Motivated.
Available.
Capable.
They get things done. They make others feel safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But here is the uncomfortable part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The motivation behind all this \u201cexcellence\u201d often comes from childhood survival \u2014 from the need for love, approval, safety, and belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It looks perfect from the outside \u2014 but the inner experience can be very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind the competence and high performance, you may find:
\u2022 exhaustion
\u2022 loneliness
\u2022 anxiety
\u2022 chronic tension
\u2022 shutdown
\u2022 emotional numbness
\u2022 people-pleasing
\u2022 burnout
\u2022 health problems
\u2022 relationships based on duty rather than intimacy<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind the calm mind and organised life, there is often a scared child who learned that love must be earned by doing, by carrying, by fixing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By being strong.
By being reliable.
By not needing anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that child never had space to simply feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I know this because I was one of those children.
And working closely with others, I see how many successful people carry the same story \u2014 silently. Their bodies speak when their voices cannot. Their symptoms shout when their minds stay composed. They pendulate between high activation (doing mode) and shutdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The world sees them functioning.
But functioning is not the same as living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Repressed emotions are not small things we can simply ignore or outwork. They live in the body. They shape personality. They form beliefs. They become identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And when someone has relied on these patterns for decades \u2014 when their entire sense of safety and love comes from being the one who holds everything together \u2014 it is nearly impossible to simply stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because the system learned long ago that productivity means safety.
Because every achievement brings a hit of safety, validation, aliveness.
Because stopping feels like too close to disappearing \u2014 like turning away from the only doorway to aliveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The body remembers what love cost.
The nervous system remembers what happened when needs were shown.
The mind remembers that emotional honesty wasn\u2019t safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We\u2019re talking about the fear of being rejected, abandoned, ridiculed, humiliated. That is what the body stored. We don\u2019t consciously know that. That\u2019s why accessing repressed emotions \u2014 often not felt at all \u2014 and expressing emotional needs feels completely out of reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We don\u2019t really have a conscious choice.
The unconscious chooses for us \u2014 and it will always choose apparent safety over freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You don\u2019t undo that by reading a quote on Instagram.
This is deep work.
And it is not a moral failure to struggle with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not everyone\u2019s story looks exactly like this. You may have had kinder, healthier parents. You may not identify with a childhood of emotional responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But emotional repression is extremely common. More common than most people think. As common, I would say, as breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We learn very young which emotions are acceptable and which are not. We learn where love comes from and where it disappears. We learn who we have to be in order to belong. And that learning goes deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yet \u2014 it is possible to see and process the pattern.
It is possible to reconnect to what was pushed down and held for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It takes honesty.
Curiosity.
And openness to meet yourself. And that too comes gradually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The child who once had to be the all-rounder is not \u201celiminated\u201d or \u201csoothed away.\u201d What happens is integration. You learn to connect the dots and transmute the energy carried by these survival programs \u2014 and the underlying repressed emotion beneath them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That inner child isn\u2019t a separate entity. What feels like a \u201cchild inside\u201d is actually emotion held in the body \u2014 emotion that took conceptual form because it was never processed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With this work, you embody it and in doing so, you move toward authenticity \u2014 not performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
